2023 FMA Annual Meeting 

11 - 14 October 2023 | Chicago, Illinois   

FMA International is pleased to announce the 2023 FMA Annual Meeting will be held in-person on 11 - 14 October 2023 at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Hotel. This conference will bring together academics and practitioners with interests in financial decision-making and provides a forum for presenting new research and discussing current issues in financial management and related topics. 

The Annual Meeting is planned as an in-person only event. COVID-19 vaccinations will not be required. Face masks, hand sanitizers, and test kits will be available. All registrants will be required to agree to a Liability Waiver and Conference Code of Conduct during the registration process. Online registration will open in mid - late June, 2023.

Conference Hotel Information

The conference hotel is the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Hotel. Conference registrants will receive the reservation link in their registration confimation email. Online registration will open in June 2023.

FMA does NOT work with a third party company to handle reservations. If you receive an email or phone call from a third party company asking you to book a room for the Annual Meeting, they are NOT affiliated with FMA.

The paper submission deadline was Friday, 7 April 2023. We are no longer accepting submissions.

Special Sessions

In addition to the regular sessions of research papers, the FMA program includes roundtables, panel discussions, tutorial lectures, and invited presentations.  The goals of these sessions are to enhance the exchange of ideas between academicians and practitioners, to provide a forum for the discussion of timely topics, and to provide educational opportunities for FMA members. To be considered for inclusion, a written proposal for a panel discussion, tutorial, or roundtable must be submitted electronically to [email protected].

To be acceptable for the program, a proposal must be fully developed.  Moreover, the proposal must differ significantly from a regular paper presentation session in format and style.  Specifically, it should not be a research paper session.  The deadline for proposals was 7 April 2023. We are no longer accepting proposals.

Conference program featuring Keynote Speaker Joe Henrich  

Professor and Chair of Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University

Dr. Henrich is currently the Ruth Moore Professor of Biological Anthropology in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. Before moving to Harvard, he was a professor of both Economics and Psychology at the University of British Columbia for nearly a decade, where he held the Canada Research Chair in Culture, Cognition and Coevolution. His research deploys evolutionary theory to understand how human psychology gives rise to cultural evolution and how this has shaped our species’ genetic evolution. Using insights generated from this approach, Professor Henrich has explored a variety of topics, including economic decision-making, social norms, fairness, religion, marriage, prestige, cooperation and innovation. He’s conducted long-term anthropological fieldwork in Peru, Chile and in the South Pacific, as well as having spearheaded several large comparative projects. In 2004 he won the Presidential Early Career Award for young scientists, and, in 2009, the Early Career Award for Distinguished Contributions bestowed by the Human Behavior and Evolution Society. In 2013-14, Dr. Henrich held the Peter and Charlotte Schoenenfeld Faculty Fellowship at NYU’s Stern School of Business. In 2018, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology awarded him the Wegner Prize for Theoretical Innovation. From 2010 to 2019, Dr. Henrich was a senior fellow in the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research in the Institutions, Organizations and Growth group and he became a fellow of the Cognitive Science Society in 2021. In 2016, he published The Secret of Our Success (Princeton) and in 2020, The WEIRDest People in the World: How the West became psychologically peculiar and particularly prosperous (FSG).


Doctoral Student Consortium on Wednesday, 11 October 2023 

Led by Dr. Ivo Welch, J. Fred Weston Distinguished Professor of Finance and Economics at the Anderson Graduate School of  Management at UCLA, the Doctoral Student Consortium includes a panel session with distinguished scholars discussing the latest advances in research and offering career advice. The afternoon breakout sessions give participants the opportunity to present job market papers or dissertation proposals and receive feedback from the faculty and panelists. Accepted participants receive complimentary conference registration.

Diversity Emerging Scholars Initiative (DESI) on Wednesday, 11 October 2023 

Led by Dr. John Graham, D. Richard Mead professor of finance at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, the Diversity Emerging Scholars Initiative (DESI) is a program that offers early career scholars (e.g., Assistant Professors or untenured professors) from underrepresented identity groups (i.e., underrepresented race/ethnicity groups, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender people, people with disabilities) opportunities to gain visibility in the profession, benefit from mentorship, receive feedback and ongoing support on their research from senior faculty, and receive advice on professional development.

Selected participants will be invited to participate in workshops at the 2023 FMA Annual Meeting on Wednesday, 11 October 2023 where they will present their papers/research idea, engage in discussion, and receive feedback from senior researchers. Participants agree to integrate feedback gained from these workshops into their papers within 9 months and send back to the senior faculty leaders for additional mentorship and support. 

Conference registration fees will be waived for selected participants.

Innovation in Teaching Award  

The Financial Management Association International's (FMA) Innovation in Teaching Award is designed to recognize inspiring educators, enhance the quality and relevance of education in finance, disseminate successful innovative practices, and elevate teaching as a craft to the next level.  

Three finalists will be invited to present in a special session at the FMA Annual Meeting in October 2023 and prizes will be offered to the winner and two runners up. 

The application deadline is 14 July 2023.

Women's Networking Luncheon (Friday, 13 October) 

Coordinated by Dr. Nicole Boyson, Professor of Finance and Interim Group Chair at Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business,  the luncheon provides an opportunity for women to network with each other, as well as share thoughts and solutions to the unique challenges women face in advancing in the finance profession. 


Assistant Professors’ Breakfast (Friday, 13 October) 

Coordinated by Dr. Ravi Jagannathan, CME Group/John F. Sandner Chair of Finance at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management  and  Co-Director of the Financial Institutions and Markets Research  Center at the Kellogg School, the breakfast panelists will share the lessons learned from their own experiences to help assistant professors navigate their careers. Additionally, they will discuss topics such as time management, the publication process, mentorship, as well as how to balance research, teaching and service to the profession.

Jack Rader FMA Members' & Friends' Breakfast (Friday, 13 October)  

As a conference tradition, this breakfast brings both long-standing and new members of the Association to learn about the FMA's latest initiatives and to hear from a distinguished speaker.

Vice President - 2023 FMA Annual Meeting Program

P. Raghavendra Rau 
Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professor of Finance
Cambridge Judge Business School

Professor Rau is the Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Professor of Finance at Cambridge Judge Business School. He also holds the Gresham Chair in business at Gresham College. He is a past president of the European Finance Association, and a past editor of Financial Management. He is a founder and director of the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) and a member of the Cambridge Corporate Governance Network (CCGN).

Professor Rau has taught at a number of universities around the world, including the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences PO), Université Paris-Dauphine, the Indian School of Business, Purdue University, the University of California at Los Angeles and most recently, the University of California at Berkeley.

Professor Rau was Principal at Barclays Global Investors, then the largest asset manager in the world, in San Francisco from 2008-2009. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Corporate Finance, the Journal of Banking and Finance, among others. His research has frequently been covered by the popular press including the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist, among others. He won the Ig Nobel Prize in Management in 2015, a prize awarded for research that makes people laugh, and then think.

The Program Track Chairs work closely with the Vice President - Program to make paper acceptance recommendations by using the review data provided by the members of the Program Committee and put together suggested sessions for the Program.
